Perinatal Mental Health

Perinatal Mental Health Disorders

Perinatal Mental Health (PMH) disorders can appear anytime during pregnancy, post-loss, and the post-partum period. PMH disorders include depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar mood disorders, and psychosis.

Screenings are key to help identify women/birth people at risk or experiencing PMADs. Fathers are also at risk for PMADs.

Every Year, more than 400,000 infants are born to mothers who are depressed, which makes perinatal depression the most under diagnosed obstetric complication in America.

As many as 1 in 7 moms (1 in 10 dads) experience symptoms of depression and anxiety during the postpartum period. Anyone can develop Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) during pregnancy and the first year after delivery.
