Perinatal Postpartum Mental Health Support at Mindful Beginnings of Lake Norman

Pregnancy and early parenthood are often described as joyful, but for many, this season can also bring unexpected emotional challenges. Perinatal Mental Health (PMH) disorders can occur any time during pregnancy, after birth, or following a loss. These include postpartum depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar mood disorders, and postpartum psychosis.

At Mindful Beginnings of Lake Norman, our therapists are specially trained in Perinatal Mental Health and provide compassionate, evidence-based support for new parents, expectant parents, and families navigating these challenges. We proudly serve the Lake Norman area, including Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, and Mooresville.

Understanding Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs)

Every year, more than 400,000 infants are born to mothers experiencing depression—making perinatal depression one of the most underdiagnosed complications of pregnancy. Research shows that 1 in 7 mothers and 1 in 10 fathers experience symptoms of depression or anxiety during pregnancy or the postpartum period.

Anyone—regardless of background or circumstances—can develop a Perinatal Mood or Anxiety Disorder (PMAD). Early screening and support are essential to help parents recover and bond with their baby.

Common Symptoms of Perinatal Mental Health Disorders:

  • Persistent sadness, hopelessness, or feeling “off”

  • Irritability, anger, or mood swings

  • Difficulty bonding with your baby

  • Racing thoughts, anxiety, or panic attacks

  • Changes in appetite or sleep

  • Intrusive or upsetting thoughts you can’t control

  • Feeling out of control or detached from yourself

  • Thoughts of regret about becoming a parent

  • Fear of harming yourself or your baby

If you recognize these symptoms, you are not alone—and help is available.
